Friday Finds: Rookie agents, patent trolls and how to reboot a blog

Real estate rookies

Many of our clients are relatively new to real estate, and sifting through onine resources can be overwhelming. For our money, REALTOR® Magazine’s Rookie Tool Kit is the best place to start. It features super basic tips like the roles and terms you should know, as well as content designed for Realtors as they navigate their first year in the industry.

For newcomers with lofty dreams (and that should be all newcomers!), read this great RE/MAX Above Magazine piece profiling Tav Schembri, a rookie agent who closed $80 million in commissions in his first year.

Take action

The Realtor Party is “a powerful alliance of REALTORS® and REALTOR® Associations working to protect and promote homeownership and property investment.” The party is currently advocating for the passing of H.R. 9, which will be up for consideration by Congress at the end of the summer.

Even if you consider yourself apolitical, you’ll likely want to support H.R. 9, a common-sense bill that will protect Realtors from being sued over copyright infringements on common website and business tools like “drop down menus or search alert functions on websites and the scanner function on a copier.”

Advice from the pros

Leigh Brown is a “a full-time residential Realtor, speaker, coach and smartass.” In short, she knows how much time you spend on the phone but she’s not impressed with your skills. In this quick video on Inman, Leigh offers her much-needed advice for how to answer a phone as a Realtor, and other etiquette that you might need to brush up on.

If you’re thinking of starting (or re-starting, or re-starting for the third time) your real estate blog, follow these fantastic tips to never run out of content. We love the idea for highlighting pop culture that has ties to your area.

This week in awesome

We’re a few weeks late to the party, but we brought snacks. The new National Association of Realtors ad campaign with Elizabeth Banks is hysterical and current, but chock-ful of usable advice. Adweek even named it their ad of the day back in May.

Here’s the first full video in the campaign:
