The cities with the luckiest homeowners in America

March 16, 2015 by Gina Thelemann in Articles

We grow up wishing for a pot of gold or a winning lottery ticket — but this St. Patrick's Day, we've decided to applaud those who have made their own luck. To determine our list of the luckiest homeowners across the country, we looked into the neighborhoods with the highest home price growth (greater than 50%) over the last five years. From there, we assessed the cities with the highest incidence of this high price growth, and normalized the results for population.

Some areas are unsurprising — when houses were sold for as little as $1 in Detroit, massive price growth is inevitable. Other top players parallel newly trendy areas for professionals, like Washington, D.C., Nashville, Austin and Boulder and Denver .

If you're a homeowner (or a Realtor!) in one of the below areas, thank your lucky stars — and then consider listing your home for a tidy profit this spring.

Methodology

  • Net change in home values in all US neighborhoods from 2010 to 2015 > 50%
  • After normalizing for population, see which cities have the highest percentage of neighborhoods with > 50% growth in home values
